playing with toys

I've been under the weather for the past few days, and am still not feeling all that well. I'm weary of lying in bed or on the sofa, tired of movies, and even reading is becoming an effort. But I can't get outside to do the things I want to be doing, so I'm sitting here in the garret feeling a bit like a sick child who is bored and getting grumpier by the moment.

When my children were sick, it was time for a new toy.

We adults often forget about toys. I'm not really talking about toys like Iphones or expensive gadgets. I mean real toys: modeling clay and Tinker toys, a dollhouse, an Etch-A-Sketch.

A few of my toys I can see from right here in my chair: a little horse ready to mine for gold, a light-up tiara, two magic wands made for me by my son, a Corgi miniature made by my daughter, a whimsical Dachshund business card holder, a tiny red wagon carrying a couple of paper stars. I tried to take photos but they came out as out of focus as I feel, so I'm sparing you the blurry edges of this flu.

I think I'm declaring tomorrow official new toy day. I'm going to stop by the toy store on my way home from the office and pick out something new to play with.

That's the spirit, where does it say adults cannot have toys? If it makes you feel better do it.

Play is therapeutic, you know... :)

I love it. I wish I had some playdoh or a slinky right now.

That's it! I need a toy, too. I do.

I hope you feel better very soon, Billie. My husband is sick, too. I wonder if I should surprise him with a toy. I wonder what his reaction would be if I did that. I wonder what he would do if I brought him some comic books or some baseball cards with bubble gum in the package (those were his favorite things as a boy. :-)

I think it's really sweet that your son made you a magic wand. I have a very special bowl in my room that was made for me by my son. I keep it next to a little box where I keep his poems. My little girls have made a lot of paintings and artwork. I love having their work in the house. They also made some bookmarks especially for me (too, too sweet!). Kids are sooooo lovely and yummikins!! I hope you get well soon so you can smooch them up again!

Kyle, I can taste the playdoh right this moment. (I never ate it, but I recall touching my tongue to it now and then b/c of that intense saltiness)

Zookeeper, toys and the gifts of children are special things indeed!

When my children were young I used to make playdough for them. It was better than the stuff you could buy in the store. I am a firm believer in toys and not ever giving up the desire to play, ever so often.

S, that's a wonderful memory - I made play dough for mine as well. I remember using different recipes trying to get just the right one, but I'm not sure I ever got it perfect. They loved playing with it though!

This also reminded me of my son's favorite "toy" for many months when he was nearing 2: I bought a flat plastic bin (the kind you generally use for storing blankets under the bed) 20 lbs. or so of white rice, and an assortment of measuring scoops and spoons. He used to sit for hours on the kitchen floor while I washed dishes and got dinner going in the late afternoons, scooping and pouring, filling and emptying. Sometimes I gave him dry beans to add in for different shapes and textures.

Don't tell me you got the flu crud?? Poor thing. If you did, it's the awfullest thing. I can completely relate to all you're going through. All. I'm maybe 82% after three weeks and still my lung-power and energy is down.

My toys are musical instruments now. I hope you get something fun and learningful. :-)

Yes, and yuck, but I don't think it's quite as severe as the one you have had. I got sick late Friday and although I'm coughing and pretty tired right this moment, I was able to get up and out and do full barn chores today. (I did sit down after each trip down the hill to the muck pile!)

So what toy did you get???

OH, you are so good to ask - b/c what happened that day was my clients ran over and by the time I was done at the office the toy store had closed.

In lieu of sharing a photo of my new toy (which I will do as soon as I get one) may I share with you one of my favorite online shopping places?
