Linda, both his parents are red sorrels with Red in their names and although it isn't visible in this photo, Redford has a big white star (think movie star) on his forehead - thus Redford!
I had never met a baby donkey until we went to meet Rafer Johnson at the age of 1 month. I couldn't believe how adorable he was and how trusting - as was his mother. Later when they joined the mama/baby/uncle herd in the field, we would sit out on the ground with all of them surrounding us, very politely taking their turns to say hello and get pats and scratches.
That loving demeanor just won me over completely.
Rafer is very confident and as we are learning, BOLD... so he is a very fun mix and does very well with the horses.
Are your donkeys the standard size? They are so handsome.
Redford is the perfect name for this little fella. George and Alan are small standards, I think. George stands at about 12 hands, and Alan is about 11. I weighed George last week before I dewormed him and came up with 400 lbs according the the height/girth/torso length formula. They've both grown a lot since I brought them home 5 months ago...I hope they don't get much bigger.
Linda, George and Alan do seem like small standards from the weight. Rafer is about 125 lbs. now and should top off at about 300.
One of our favorite read-aloud books was Brighty of the Grand Canyon. It prompted my daughter to draw a picture of a donkey that hangs in our laundry room today, so this donkey love started a long time ago for us!
Arlene, it seems like a long way away, since he'll come in August/September.
Getting Rafer Johnson gelded is looming before me right now and keeping me distracted. Between that and dental work for whatever horses need it, I'm going to need sedation myself! I do well during the procedures themselves but afterwards feel like I've been hit by a truck.
