Rafer and Redford join in Sheaffer's outrage

Our dear friend Sheaffer has posted this about the Russian donkey who was harnessed and parasailed up and down a beach by the Sea of Asov.

We were alerted to the story first by a camera-obscura reader, and appreciate the information and heads up.

Please join all our donkey friends and family in expressing outrage against this act of extreme cruelty to an innocent donkey.

If you live in the US, you can contact the US Ambassador to the Russian Federation, John Beyrle, at:

U.S. Embassy in Moscow

Bolshoy Deviatinsky Pereulok No. 8
Moscow 121099, Russian Federation
Tel: +7 (495) 728-5000, fax: 728-5090
(Moscow is 8 hours ahead of Washington)
Consular e-mail (for questions regarding visas and other consular services):

Let him know that you want this act investigated and punished to the full extent of the law.

Thank you, Billie. United we stand against this act of selfish, senseless thuggery perpetrated against an innocent, terrified donkey. It seems the landing was a rough one, with the donkey being dragged to the point of near-death on the beach. If I can find photos of the criminals, I will post them on my blog so we can see what the face of evil actually looks like.

What a bunch of jerks. I hope they catch them and prosecute them. How can anybody nowadays think this is a good idea. The poor donkey. I'm hoping he will get a good home after this and rehabilitation with caring people.

Sheaffer, I saw a still shot of the donkey in the air, but cannot bring myself to watch the video footage. I cannot imagine being on a beach and seeing this atrocity in person. :/

Arlene, I hope he gets a caring, loving home too.

I have a few thoughts on how the offenders might be brought to justice, involving harnesses and ropes and being dragged to the courthouse against their wills. (okay, maybe not REALLY, but good grief - it's hard to imagine these people even have brains, much less nerve endings...)

I just don't know what to say - unbelievable thoughtless cruelty - I am relieved to see this news You Tube report that says the owner turned himself in and the donkey has been vet checked and is, at least, physically ok.

I do think the public outcry quite probably saved this donkey, and other hapless creatures a similar fate. I hope so.

I'm glad the donkey was able to finally be checked out physically - although what I just read indicates that the authorities are not filing abuse charges, which I think is ridiculous.

The owner of the donkey should not be allowed to own animals of any kind after a stunt like this.

If you are emailing any of the embassies, please make it clear that you will withhold your cash from anything associated with Russia. Money talks far more loadly than outrage!

Thanks, Claire, and Dougie for additional good tips!
