My essay, Diary of a Cutting, appears in Riverfeet Press' new anthology, Awake in the World. It's a lovely book with a wonderful selection of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction about nature in all her glory. Just out in June, it's available for purchase HERE.
Diary of a Cutting is about the timbering of what I call the "hundred-acre wood" behind November Hill. It's actually 103 acres and for most of the time we've lived here it was a forest. The cutting of trees around November Hill began on the morning of the day our sweet black mare Salina died, so the screaming of the cutting machines became a sound that pains me in more than one way every time I hear it.
I miss Salina and I miss all the trees.
If you purchase before the end of August 10% of your purchase price will be donated to the National Parks Association.

Congratulations for your story in print! I will check it out.
Sorry I'm late to comment but we've been busy around here with plumbing problems and birthdays. Today is my birthday and my older daughters birthday. Yesterday we went to lunch, today another lunch with my son and dinner with husband and tomorrow I need to meet an insurance inspector at the farmhouse(a car hit the house) with minimal damage etc. so I've had my hands full. Hope you're enjoying your sons time with you. I'm sure you're busy packing.
Happy birthday to you AND to your daughter!! How wonderful to have the same birthday - what a treat to share in the celebrations.
I am so sorry about a car hitting your house - my gosh! I hope all are okay and that the whole insurance stuff plus repairs go quickly and smoothly for all of you living there.
Everything is fine with the house. The stone planter on the corner saved bigger damage, she hit that and spun into the side and just dented a board. I was happy no one was hurt but her car is totaled. It's a bad corner and needs a four way stop. Thanks for the birthday wishes!
Oh, thank goodness! Hope this prompts that 4-way stop you need.
Such a poignant, moving story and the anthology is beautifully presented with other accounts of our need to change our collective relationship with this planet.
Thanks, Matthew! I was so happy this piece found a home, and a perfect one, I think.
