for those who use Adequan

A heads-up: I read on an equine list yesterday that due to a recent FDA inspection, production of Adequan will stop for about six months. I can't find any information on this with a quick Google search, so I'm not sure what the entire story is - but wanted to put this up so that anyone who uses Adequan for horses and/or canines can look further.

I don't think there's been a recall, but I'd want to know what happened, why, and whether the product will be available during this interim in production.

Called the manufacturers. Listened multiple times to the pre-written phone statements. Downloaded and read through the non-informational PDF response. Got transferred to dead ends... FDA website is down.

I loathe pharmaceutical companies :)

The two people who confirmed this for me are an equine researcher and a vet, so I feel the info comes from reliable sources - since I don't use Adequan at this point, I don't have time to do further digging, but did want to pass on the info - hopefully someone can find out more and share.

I will post more if anyone lets me know more!

Info from my equine vet office re Adequan:

Supposedly the problem was actually with bottles and not the medicine itself, as well as with the human version, not canine or equine. The production facility will not be producing for at least a month - as long as six months - no one can confirm how long.

I was able to find one source online that has not sold out - Allivet.

My equine vet said that larger barns have been flipping out about the supply interruption, and they (the vet offices) are rationing what they have in stock to prevent hoarding lol.

Thanks for the heads up billie. Val was on Adequan for a hip injury when I got him, and I have kept him on it with good success. I would hate to find out the hard way that he really, really needs it.

Thanks, C, and glad you got more info from your vet. I just didn't want anyone to go to reorder and find this out when they had used their last bottle.

Thanks for the news! Glad to hear it's not a problem with the product itself. Geez, what ISN'T being recalled these days?!

Michelle, it's crazy, isn't it? Thanks to C again who nailed this for us all!

C.F.S ref'd "human version" -- no such thing licensed in the US. Not sure about Europe.

Anon, thanks for the info - I did a very quick and dirty Google search and it appears (in my limited read) that Adequan is sometimes being used off label by humans.

I'm not using Adequan for equines, dogs, OR myself, so appreciate the extra research readers have done wrt this post - thanks to all!
