I've been saying I was going to list the books in my reading pile, and since I came up to the garret to get another book to read (I just finished Charles Baxter's The Feast of Love), it's a good time to do so.
Right now I'm looking at:
Wayne Caldwell's Cataloochee
Leif Enger's Peace Like A River
Peter Hoeg's Smilla's Sense of Snow
Sandra Kring's The Book of Bright Ideas
Sara Gran's Come Closer
Chris Bohjalian's The Double Bind
Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Mineral
Angela Davis-Gardner's Forms of Shelter
That's just one of the piles, and some of the titles are angled so I can't see them, so that's not quite all of the ones in this particular batch.
I'm picking Smilla's Sense of Snow for the next read. It's what called to me as I scanned the stack.
In spite of all these books waiting, I'm interested in recommendations - so be sure to tell me what needs to come live in my pile!

It seems you have quite a list to get through already. I have a huge stack of books waiting on me too. The one I am reading right now is Charles Frazier's Thirteen Moons, I am almost done, and liked it very much. It is the sort of book that calls to me as I find any book with history as its base one that I can't pass by in the book store.
Oh, Charles Frazier is one of my most favorite authors! I loved Cold Mountain and Thirteen Moons. One of my favorite passages ever comes from Thirteen Moons.
Have you read Lee Smith's On Agate Hill? For some reason I'm thinking you might enjoy that one if you haven't read it yet.
Cataloochee is supposed to be very good too - Appalachian history and lore the base for the story.

I read Smilla's Sense of Snow some years ago for my book club. I liked it very much. I am reading now, The Solace of Leaving Early by Haven Kimmel. I am really enjoying this book and will look for more by this author.
It's interesting the comments so far are naming some of my favorite writers! Haven Kimmel is another favorite of mine. I highly recommend all her novels, as well as her memoirs.
Funny, too, that both Charles Frazier and Haven Kimmel live in the same state as I do!
I have heard both of them read, and had a very funny conversation with Haven once when her memoir and first book was just out.
It's a small world, and it makes me happy that we're fans of some of the same authors!
Go for "Peace Like a River" next. It's a wonderful book! I also liked Barbara Kingsolver's - It would be good to read with Spring coming. Time for planning a garden and some of the recipes are really great. I'll have to check out Thirteen Moons.
A wonderful list. I've heard of only two of them, Hoeg & Kingsolver. My reading has slowed as my writing has sped up. How does that happen? Perhaps it's an armature dysfunction. ;-)
Okay, Victoria, I'll try Leif Enger's book next - and then Barbara Kingsolver. Her Poisonwood Bible is one of my all-time favorites, and I love her take on living on the earth.
Joseph, I'm enjoying and very nearly done with Smilla's Sense of Snow. I'm impressed with how adeptly he's pulled me forward in this story. And with the translation.
