Relaxation and breathing are a big part of riding. I also believe that a relaxed horse is a happy horse.

When I ride I always try to ride with a following light hand with light contact. A relaxed seat and back. My aids are never choppy or harsh but barely there, which in turn makes the horse respond on cue without a jumping into it sort of transition. We always try for effortless smooth transitions. That said "on the bit" might be a misunderstood phrase in the horse world. But when the horse reaches for the bit and a connection with your hands, to me it means the horse wants to be connected to the rider and allows himself to come through from his hind end rounding his back and working effortlessly for a compatible partnership. The very fact that the horse comes onto the bit in a soft way, to me, is a result of relaxation and not the opposite.Grey Horse Mattershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05837575441967937196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31257856.post-5814343729817427872010-11-14T12:48:13.292-05:002010-11-14T12:48:13.292-05:00Hi Billie-

That's why driving with the seat is so counterproductive, I think.

Nice post (again)!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
